As the only state museum for ethnology in Baden-Württemberg, the Linden-Museum Stuttgart has a unique collection of art and everyday objects from Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania, which originates from the 19th and 20th century collection of the Verein für Handelsgeographie. Since 1911 the present museum building has been located at Hegelplatz. A new building for the Linden-Museum has been subject to discussion for several decades

First, the Minister for Science, Research and the Arts, Theresia Bauer, welcomed the participants to the conference “The New Museum”. Marc Gegenfurtner, Head of the Cultural Office of the City of Stuttgart, also gave a welcoming address on behalf of the City of Stuttgart. The director of the Linden Museum, Prof. Dr. Inés de Castro, then outlined the reasons and ambitions for a new concept for the museum.
